Ghat, situated in the Fezzan's south-west corner, was once the only permanent Touareg settlement in the Sahara, strategically located on the route between the Mediterranean and sub-Saharan Africa. The town now functions as a base for tourist expeditions to the rock art sites in the neighbouring Jabal Akakus.
